This article explains how to make Google Chrome the default browser on various operating systems. We will cover Windows 10, macOS, Android and more.
The first thing that I do on any new Windows 10 computer is this; download and make Google Chrome your default browser on Windows 10. Your browser is one of the most-used apps on your computer. That should be why we all go to the download page for our favorite browser, as soon as we get a new computer set up. If your favorite browser is different from what you get with your computer, this is when you change it as well.
Chrome will show a prompt to make it the default browser soon after you install it on Windows 10. This is the easiest way to make it the default.
You can also visit chrome://settings, click on You and Google and click on Make Default.
Follow these steps to change the default browser from Windows 10 settings:
- From the Start menu, go to Settings > System.
- Click Default Apps
- Scroll down to Web browser and click the + sign.
- Choose Google Chrome from the list.
We hope you have set Google Chrome as your default browser now. If you need additional information, here is Microsoft’s official article about changing default browsers.
After using Chrome on Windows 10, if you want to switch back to Edge, or any other browser, you can do it using the same method explained here. In the last step, select your new browser and make it the default app.
Change It From Chrome Settings
You can change your default browser from within Google Chrome Settings too. Here is how to do it:
- Go to settings on Chrome, (click settings icon or open chrome://settings)
- Search for “Default Browser”
- Click “Make Chrome my default browser”
- And you are done!
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Advanced.
- Tap Default apps.
- Tap Browser app > Chrome.
- Chrome is now your default browser.
To test, open a link from any other app. For example, open a link from messenger or Facebook app.
If you have a macOS device, follow these steps:
- Click the Apple menu.
- Select System Preferences.
- Click General.
- Select Google Chrome from the Default browser list.
This sets Google Chrome as your default browser on macOS.
