The browser that opens the website when you click a link from an email is your current primary or default browser. You could also call this your “main browser”. How do you change this default browser and use Chrome instead?

Let me show you how.

The first thing that I do on any new Windows 10 computer is; download and install a web browsing app (internet browser) like Chrome or Edge.

Your browser is one of the most-used apps on your computer. That should be why we all go to the download page for our favorite browser, as soon as we get a new computer set up. If your favorite browser is different from what you get with your computer, this is when you change it as well.

Google Chrome will show a prompt to make it the default browser soon after you install it on Windows 10 or Windows 7. This is the easiest way to make it the default browser.

Set Default Browser on Windows 11

You can also visit chrome://settings, click on You and Google and click on Make Default.

Follow these steps to change the default browser from Windows 10 settings:

1. From the Start menu, go to Settings > System.
   

2. Click Default Apps.
3. Scroll down to the Web browser and click the + sign.
   
4. Choose Google Chrome from the list.

After using Chrome on Windows 10, if you want to switch back to Edge, or any other browser, you can do it using the same method explained here. In the last step, select your new browser and make it the default app.

Change It From Chrome Settings

You can change your browser settings from within Google Chrome Settings too. Here is how to do it:

1. Go to settings on Chrome, (click the settings icon or open chrome://settings)
2. Search for “Default Browser”
3. Click“Make Chrome my default browser

Default Browser on Android

What is your current browser on your Android phone?

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap Advanced.
3. Now select Default apps.
4. Select Browser app > Chrome.
5. Chrome is now your default browser.

To test, open a link from any other app. For example, open a link from messenger or Facebook app.

Make Chrome the Default Browser on macOS

Are you currently using Safari on your Mac? You can change this and start using Chrome.

If you have a macOS device, follow these steps:

1. Click the Apple menu.
2. Select System Preferences.
3. Click General.
4. Select Google Chrome from the Default browser list.

This sets Google Chrome as your default browser on macOS.

For Chromebook Users

If you are a Chromebook user, you might have already noticed that Google Chrome is your default browser.

However, at the moment, there is no way to change this and to use Firefox or any other browser on your Chromebook.

You could, however, install Android apps from the Google Play Store.
