Set Background Image for Google’s Secure Shell App for Chrome

Updated On:

By

Secure Shell is an xterm-compatible terminal emulator and stand-alone ssh client for Chrome. This is an official Chrome app created by Google. According to Google, it uses Native-Client to connect directly to ssh servers without the need for external proxies A cool thing from Secure Shell app’s settings, background images.

To set background image for Secure Shell app, go to app’s settings and look for background-image. On this field, replace the image url or, if you do not have anything there yet, type in url(your-image-url).

Another useful feature of the Google Secure Shell app is that your settings sync across all the devices that you use. If you have never heard of this app, download it from here.

Thanks Denny.

Another handy thing about the secure shell app, besides using it for ‘ssh’, is it can be used on your Chrome OS device for a ‘crosh’ terminal session by specifying user@host as ‘chronos@>crosh’.

And it can be combined with the ‘Crosh Window’ app to make it even easier to get a crosh terminal session.

How would I use this with a local image file?

      I don’t think you can.

I tried replacing the background-image url with a file in ~/Downloads, as shown below, and it did not display it.

      – file:///home/chronos/u-$CROS_USER_ID_HASH/Downloads/bkgrd.png

I believe it will only accept an image hosted on a web site with a true url.

I tried with a picture in my google drive, that shows me a share link.
        Doesn’t work either.

First, enable Inspections by entering about:flags in the URL bar, then tick Show “View Source” and “Inspect Element” in the context menu. Then, right click and press Inspect Element to view the CSS selectors for that element. you need the css value.
