Chrome’s Redesigned Settings Page will Display One Section At a Time

Google is redesigning the landing page for Chrome’s Settings page. The new design will display one section at a time, reducing the clutter.

Settings Landing Page Redesign

This story starts with a new experimental Chrome flag. It showed up today in the Chromium source code.

Settings Landing Page Redesign: Changes the layout of the chrome://settings page to only show one section at a time.

Allow me to explain.

Here is how a screenshot from the current Chrome Settings page design:

Chrome Settings Page

I have opened the Privacy and security section. However, you can see the Appearance section also on the screen. This is because the Privacy and security section does not have a separate landing page. When you select it from the side tab, the page scrolls to the Privacy section of a (very) long page.

If you expand the Advanced section the page will become even longer. This is what Google is trying to change. Reducing the clutter.

Luckily for us, the feature request bug for this flag has a video demo of how the new design will work.

As you can see in this video, the new design gives a separate landing page for the individual sections of the Settings app.

Summary

I am hoping to see this new flag in the Canary channel of Google Chrome in a day or two. When it is ready, I shall update this article with more screenshots.

In the meantime, I would love to hear your thoughts on this change. Scroll down for the comments box.
