‘Discover’ Feed Coming to Chromebook Help App?

A new experimental flag added to Chromium code has left me confused. Is Google bringing Discover, the article feed, to the Help app on Chromebooks?

Help App Discover Tab

I know only one Discover feature in the Chrome OS world. It is the list of articles that you see on Chrome’s new tab page.

Discover Feed

You will also see the Discover feed on the Pixel launcher. Today, a new Chrome OS experimental flag makes me think that Google might be bringing this to the desktop.

What makes me confused though, is the place where they are adding Discover to. The flag says it adds Discover to the Help app.

Help App Discover Tab: Enables the Discover tab in the help app. Even if the feature is enabled, internal app logic might decide not to show the tab.

If Google adds Discover to the Help app, it will be the first spot on the desktop world where you get these content recommendations. However, is the Help app the best place for this content?

That, I am not so sure.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this possible new feature. Let me know if you think if the Discover mentioned here is something else.

  1. How interesting – a lot of issues with Discover for many publishers since the start of March – all of it fitting the timeline of Chrome and Android updates. Might the ‘Help App’ refer to a settings tab in Chromebook where you can customise your feed like you can on your phone? Will be watching this with interest.
