I have said this many times. It is time to do it again. New Tab Page or NTP is where Google most of Chrome’s design experiments show up. I wouldn’t surprised if NTP is Google Chrome team’s permanent project for yearly interns.
Some of those changes have been really popular too. For example, the recent change from tab thumbnails to favicons made NTP clean and beautiful. It was not just a visual change. We can now fully customize those tiles on NTP.
The latest edition of the NTP story is from Android. This is not totally new, but a big update on existing feature.
Google has been showing article suggestions on Chrome for Android’ NTP for a while now. According to 9to5Google, there is a better-looking version of this now available for us to test.
How does it look, with large images and all?
To test this flag, open a new tab and go to chrome://flags#interest-feed-content-suggestions. From the drop down menu, select “Enabled(larger images)” or “Enabled (larger images and snippets)”.
As the name suggests, the larger images and snippets version will show you snippets and large images.
With this change, the feed is no longer a long list of articles with thumbnails of the same size. It actually looks a lot like 9to5Google’s home page!
This small change makes the article feed less boring.
I will still stick to my feed on my launcher. I don’t really want to open Chrome just to look at some article recommendations.
It might be a different story if they add this feature to the desktop version of Chrome. I am sure there will be a lot of people saying a big NO to article recommendations on NTP. I might however be interested in such a feature.
