Google is Making it Harder for Sites See If You Are Using Incognito Mode

Currently, there is a quick and easy way for websites to find out if you are using Incognito mode while visiting them. Google is working on closing this loophole.

Among other things, Incognito mode is used to browse websites without being tracked. Some websites however use a simple method to find out if visitors are using Incognito mode and use it for their advantage.

FileSystem” API, used by applications to store files is disabled in Incognito mode. All you have to do is ask user’s browser to load the API to find out of they are using Incognito mode.

What is the solution?

Google is working on a Incognito Mode FileSystem API just for this purpose. It will be created out of RAM and will be deleted when you leave Incognito mode.

So, let us re-imagine this scenario with this new change in place. User visits a website in Incognito mode. Website asks it for FileSystem API. Chrome creates a temporary Incognito mode FileSystem and gives it to the website and tricks it. User continues browsing as normal!
