One of the easiest ways to set up Chromecast was to open Chrome and go to google.com/chromecast/setup/. This has changed. You can no longer set up Chromecast from your browser. Instead, you will need to download the Google Home app.
Google has not offered any explanation on why they made this change. However, the official Help Center article explaining how to set up Chromecast now has the following message:
We no longer support Chromecast setup on a computer. To set up your Chromecast, please use a mobile device.
On, and yes, there are already people complaining or asking about this feature on forums.
If you open google.com/chromecast/setup however, I still have a link that says “Or, you can set up your Chromecast using this computer”
So, if you or your friends have a new Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra, and is trying to figure out how to set it up using Chrome on their Windows PC or Mac, that’s no longer an option.
I am still wondering why this change. I thought Google was good at bringing app-only features to the web.
What do you think? Or why do you think this was changed? Let me know in comments!
