This is probably the first time that I am posting something here because of its cuteness value instead of news value. So, let’s get started.
Chrome Logo Will be New Tab Page Favicon
Chrome recently added picture of a lab flask as favicon for the chrome://flags page. However, the new tab page still does not have a favicon.
Looks like this is changing.
I noticed a code commit today that adds Chrome’s logo in black and white as favicon for the new tab page.
The code commit simply says “Use the chrome icon as the default favicon for the NTP.“
Here is the image that the team is planning to use:
Custom Background Image Sync
One of the main features of the recent new tab page redesign is the ability to change the background image of the new tab page.
It was possible to change the new tab page background using extensions, but the built-in feature gives you the option to either choose an image from “Chrome backgrounds” or upload a custom image.
There were code commits related to making Google Photos a possible option to choose background images from. This would have allowed us to use the same image across multiple devices without re-uploading it from each computer.
I don’t know what happened to that plan, but it is not available even in the Canary version of Chrome and Chrome OS. However, I noticed a code change request today to enable sync for custom images.
[NTP] Use Sync for custom background pref
Mark the existing custom background pref as
syncable. Currently we have no mechanism for syncing a locally used file, so add an additional, non-synced pref that is checked to see if the local file can be used. If the local file is not present, fall back to the default background.
It is possible that the team decided drop the idea of Google Photos as new tab page background and let users sync their custom background images that they upload. That’s almost as good as Google Photos background image.
I will be really happy if this feature makes it into the Stable channel. I wouldn’t want give Chrome access to the entire Google Photos collection just to make one photo my NTP background. I can easily download that photo and upload (that’s what I’ve done now) it the NTP. I’m good as long as they sync that image.
There is however one use case with Google Photos that I will be really happy if they implement. Make it possible to assign an entire album to be New Tab Page background. I would love to assign the same album that I use as my Chromecast backdrop on Chrome NTP too!
What about you?
