Chrome’s Omnibox Suggestions Now Show Favicons Instead of Generic Icons

A few weeks ago I told you about a new Omnibox feature making the content more colorful with images. Looks like there are more pieces to this redesigned Omnibox layout. Today, I noticed how Chrome has started showing favicons for suggestions instead of generic vector icons.

Omnibox UI Show Suggestion Favicons

The Canary version (most probably the Dev version also will have this flag) has this flag enabled by default:

  • Name: Omnibox UI Show Suggestion Favicons
  • URL: chrome://flags/#omnibox-ui-show-suggestion-favicons
  • Description: Shows favicons instead of generic vector icons for URL suggestions in the Omnibox dropdown. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS

Here is what happens when this flag is enabled, first, a screenshot from the Stable channel:

Now, here is the screenshot from Canary:

In the old design, you’ll see a bookmark icon if you are opening a page that you have already bookmarked. In the new design, you will see the site’s favicon even if you have bookmarked it.

I like the new design better because it is more “glanceable” You can identify sites with a quick glance. Plus, it looks richer now. Speaking of rich, to refresh your memory, here the Omnibox answers redesign:

So, what do you think? Do you like it colorful or the way it used to be, generic vector icons for all sites? Drop me a comment and let me know what your thoughts are.
