Google engineers working on Chrome New Tab Page is always busy cooking up something new. This post is not really about any solid news, but to share some interesting code changes I found today. A recent commit to Chrome source code says this:
first draft new tab extension
This is strictly “work-in-progress” material. The HTML file associated with this code change simply has “Hello World”. The js file that is included along with it has some more details:
“name”: “Override New Tab Example”,
“description”: “Override the new tab page with a blank one”,
From this brief description, this could be an example extension that Google is making for New Tab Page. May be something that users can customize with their own content? I am just thinking out loud here.
Then there are these images. These images are clearly placeholder for something else to come. Hmm, if this is really an example extension, these images might stay, right? Here they are:
