Google has been experimenting with Chrome’s new tab page from the day one. When they launched Chrome, the new tab page with most visited website also was a new experiment. They continue to experiment with the new tab page, adding new features including the Google Doodle (We will soon see third-party doodles on Chrome).
Lately, the focus of the new tab page experiment is on Android. Google recently launched Chrome Home and content recommendations. Now, they are improving these content suggestions with categories.
I noticed this as a code change request a days ago. It said:
This CL adds the UI support for site suggestions. These are displayed
behind the flag “Site Exploration UI” in both the new tab page and in
Chrome Home. The suggestions are shown in a tab layout, each tab
corresponding to a category – one of Personalized, Social,
Entertainment, News, Ecommerce, Tools.
This feature is now available on Chrome for Android Canary:
