Our friends over at Chrome Unboxed have made a very interesting discovery about future Chromebooks. A Chromebook board named Eve according to a Chromium OS commit, comes with an “Assistant” key.
The firs thing that came to my mind when I read this news is this. Why not rename or replace the Search key instead of adding a new key?
Maybe that’s what they are doing. We will have to wait.
Here is the commit log:
# Special keyboard mapping for Eve project. The keyboard has an extra
# “Assistant” key.
Eve, according to reports from Chrome Unboxed, is probably the next Pixel Chromebook. This is not a coincidence. Google always uses its hardware projects to lead the way, and show the rest of the industry the type of hardware they expect.
If you need more proof that Eve is getting Assistant support, take a look at this commit. It talks about adding “Wake on voice” capabilities. Sounds like an Assistant friendly device?
The APK Teardown
Now, here’s more proof. Android Police found this while going through the new Google APK:
<string name=”chrome_os_opa_ready_screen_explanation”>When your Chromebook is set up, press the Assistant button or say Ok Google to get help from your Assistant anytime.</string>
These bits of Chrome OS and APK codes give us clear indication that Google is planning to add an Assistant key to Chromebooks. Will they replace the Search key or rename it? That’s something that we will have to wait and watch!
