The new tab page is the most happening place on Google Chrome. The Chrome team has always experimented with the contents there and with the new tab page API, extensions started pouring in, giving all kind of options to users.
Not all of them were popular. If you remember the initial days of Google Chrome, people were going crazy about those most visited sites thumbnails.
With Chrome version 54 on Android, Google added a new feature to the Android version of the new tab page, suggested articles. As usual, there are plenty of people looking for a way to disable this feature.
Just like almost any other Google Chrome feature, you have choices here too.
Disable Suggested Articles
This is simple. Open up chrome://flags and look for the following two flags:
Disable both of them and restart Google Chrome. Your new tab page should now back to the regular, cleaner one.
One more thing. Since this a flag that we are talking about, things can change any time. You might see the articles back as and when Google decides to remove the flag.
Hopefully, Google will give us an option to disable this feature in settings, when this comes out of beta.
Or, like many other Google experiments, this also might go away or reincarnate as another feature or part of another service.
