When Chromebooks were first announced I thought they are going to be a big hit in markets like India. They did well in the education market and smartphones beat them here in India. When the second wave of Chromebooks came (the $249 Samsung Chromebook and the like) I hoped for them to be popular in India. That didn’t happen (partly due to the pricing). Then there were the new $149 Chromebooks, they also failed to make Chromebooks popular in India.
I am still hopeful that they will someday will become popular at least in schools here. For now, I am keeping my fingers crossed for the newest Chrome OS product to be released in India, the Asus Chromebit.
The price is still not something that I am still not happy with (approximately $120) but still, a useful computer for INR 7999 is a pretty nice deal. That at least, is a start. Google really need to push their software here in schools and businesses for Chromebooks to gain traction.
Oh, and there are rumors of a $49 Chromebit!
