Make Any Website a Chrome Hosted App with This Simple Trick

Google Chrome is getting a one click “app maker”. Now, do not confuse yourself with the actual Chrome App, (AKA Native App or Packaged App). We are talking about hosted apps here.

Yes, they are still the same old “glorified bookmarks” but I have come to appreciate them more after moving completely to Chrome OS. I am sure most of the Chrome OS users will agree.

Chrome team is making it easy for users to create their own Chrome Hosted Apps from their favourite websites. It is available on Chromium builds for now. Wait for a few weeks, and you will get this on Chrome.

How to Create Chrome Hosted App for Any Website

  1. Enable the chrome://flags/#enable-streamlined-hosted-apps flag (you will need this until the feature is final)
  2. Go to the website you wish to create an app for.
  3. Go to the menu button, select ‘Tools’ and click on ‘Create app for this website’.
  4. Done!

Waiting for this to show up on Chrome OS dev channel!

I enabled this on my chromebook, but don’t get the create line in the tools menu. I am on the stable channel, do I need to be on the dev channel?

It is better not to switch to Dev channel just for this feature. Wait till next release and see if it shows up there ….
