The last post on this blog said, “Is LG Planning Chromebooks“. Looks like it was not correct, fully. My discussion with Francois Beaufort on Google Plus has made both of us conclude that LG is planning a Chromebox instead of Chromebook.
Why? Read on…
François posted an image of the chrome://system page of the Samsung Chromebox. The code name for this box seemed “Slumpy” which is Google’s code name for Samsung’s Chromebox. There is a “Lumpy” being mentioned in Chromium OS bugs. So, if Slumpy is Samsung’s Chromebox, Lumpy must be LG’s Chromebox.
Do you agree?
Aura Window Manager for Chromeboxes
Google might introduce the new “Aura Window Manager” along with Chromeboxes to give them a UI experience little closer to what we all are used to, the windows and desktops, and not just a browser that you can not escape from, as in Chromebooks now. Here is a very short video of an early version of Aura.
Aura was first spotted 06/2011 on chromestory.com and has made a lot of progress after that. It looked like this project is getting a lot more attention lately, being mentioned in the Chromium code base a lot more frequently.
Specs of LG Chromebox is not known yet, but it may be something similar to the Samsung Chromebox, with i5-2520M processor. Stay tuned for more updates on specs, it won’t be too long before they are unearthed!!!
I received an email about this post from someone who I feel, is writing with a lot of confidence. I am posting that email to see what you guys think.
Good guess about Stumpy meaning Samsung and Lumpy meaning LG. It’s wrong though. Stumpy is the Google team’s code for the Samsung ChromeBox. Lumpy is the Google team’s code name for the Samsung ChromeBook.
Maybe LG is building a ChromeBook or a ChromeBox, but that’s not the evidence. Samsung does not like the Lumpy name. Their code name is different, Newton.
What do you think? Are we going to see a different variant of Samsung Chromebook?
