“Android Has A Crush on Chrome” was a wrong title I guess. Not many cared about that news when I posted one month ago. Well, now that Android on Chrome is the talk of the town, let us look at it again. To add to the mix, I have collected some visualizations from various articles.
First Sign – An Announcement
As a group of Googlers announced on the WebKit-Dev group  (Source – Google’s Peter Beverloo), the Android team is now committed to working more closely with the WebKit community. Here is that message.
“We would like to give an update about WebKit on Android. A while ago, we started the effort to upstream the Android port of WebKit. For a variety of reasons, this work took longer than anticipated and was never finished. We realize that the incomplete Android port that exists today in WebKit ToT has caused quite a bit of confusion and inconvenience to the project as a whole and we are very sorry for that.â€
Build Environment Ready for Android Version of Chrome
Few days ago, we saw one more sign in the Chromium Code. A build environment for android was set. “Upstream: Set build target and evnvironment for Android ” it said.
This indicated that the team is ready to build Chrome for Android. What we already know is, Google has been working on a touch UI for Chrome for long time now. There is even a tablet called “Seaboard” to test these things, just like the CR48. So, putting something together for Android won’t be that tough for the Chrome team, especially because Android is also part of Google’s inventory.
More Android Related Activity
More changes related to Android are showing up in the Chromium Code now. Here is one I saw today.
“added upstreamed files for Android platform.
– Excluded the files related to icu and JNI, because third_party/icu
can’t compiled and JNI files have been uploaded yet.
So, it is confirmed that Chrome is coming to Android but how soon? Will it be ready before Ice cream Sandwich or Android 2.4 is up for release? We will have to wait to get an answer for that. I will keep an eye on the latest development for you all. Stay tuned!!
