Google Chrome OS Is Now Beta !

Chrome OS Beta

Chrome OS Beta

My RSS feed reader is full of the rumor that says Chrome OS is coming this month, with a Google branded netbook. ( I do not post every rumor that is around about chrome os , hope its ok with you all ! )

If those rumor are correct, we will see Google selling their own netbook online like they did for Android with Nexsus One.

All the rumors point to a November release of Chrome OS. Right on time, we see an official page that says Chrome OS is now beta. Coincidence ?  I hope not !  The page says, Chrome OS is now “cros,beta,8.0.552.19,7.0.531.1” So, things are getting hot around here .. I can feel the heat !!

Question : If Google releases a Google Branded Chrome OS Netbook this month, will you buy it ? Do you think it can compete with the new Apple Air ?

Dinsan made Google Chrome his default browser within hours of its release. He fell in love with Chromebooks from the day he first touched one and is currently obsessed with Chromecasts.

@chrome story, I will be disappointed if you have to buy one to do your review. It seems that SOMEONE at Google would let you borrow a review machine for a few weeks.

If you believe the online rumors, they are building something like 60,000-70,000 units. They will dogfood a lot of those. Some have to be available for the blogosphere.

As for buying one, I’ve been letting my non-technical wife use a machine with Chromium on it. She loves the safety that I’ve told her it has. She feels like it can be trusted. She just needs Skype to talk to the kids.

So I’ll buy at least one depending on the price and how they are selling them. After all, I did buy 2 Nexus Ones.

awesome ! hmm I am not sure if they will send one here in India and this is not so big blog for them to get enough publicity ..

Would you be able to write about your experience on using chrome os full time, for how your wife feels about it ? I think many people are worried about if chrome os device will still be usable for someone who spends most of their time on the web.

She would be willing, but you have to understand that her knowledge of computers is limited. As an example, she calls the chromium notebook her babybook.

I’ll have her start on her chromium experiences.

Yes, that’l be great .. I am actually looking for something of that sorts .. experiences from people who use computers for their normal browsing and do not worry about installing, upgrading updating etc etc …. 🙂 my email is

I am only interested in downloading and installing it on my laptop. Does that look like an option?

    • chrome story 05/11/2010, 9:51 pm

Chrome OS ? Google wont let you download Chrome OS and install .. it will ship it with devices ..

      you can try Chromium OS

    • Harvey 05/11/2010, 9:54 pm

According to all of the news reports, the standard Chrome OS will only be offered pre-installed on new machines.

There is an Open Source version available as Chromium OS with which you can do anything you want. Several people are offering Chromium installs now. is the one I’m most familiar with.

and I use vanilla from hexxeh which is cool and unmodified version 🙂

the server for vanilla is down at the moment though ..

Yes, I’d buy one if the price is pitched where I expect it to be – around current mid range netbook offerings. I’ve experimented with Chromium OS on a laptop with limited success. My thinking is that I’ll stay away from dual-boot options on a laptop / netbook and go for a single install Chrome OS netbook when it’s available. I’m currently moving from PC based apps to online for personal computing where this is practical so I’m looking forward to getting to grips with Chrome OS.

Google will have to do very well with the pricing to get Chrome OS popular .. right ? 🙂

      • Harvey 07/11/2010, 3:22 am

This being Google, we won’t know the answer until they make the announcement. They didn’t price the Nexus One very well. It sold OK, but not great.

        • chrome story 07/11/2010, 3:51 am

you have a point there … 🙂 Google was trying to be little apple there .. making sure that they have the best hardware which let the price go up and up … but people wont pay the Apple tax to Google uh ? 😀
