Have you been reading about a Firefox extension that lets anyone, yes anyone view / capture your social networking / email information if you are using an unsecured Wifi network ? Here is a Google Chrome tip that can help you save yourself.
I was worried about security of my browsing sessions as well, just as you are now. More reading on this gave me some suggestions to surf more securely. One of them was to use the encrypted ( SSL ) version of of websites where ever possible. Yes, gmail, facebook and twitter has encrypted versions which will keep your data secured.
You can use this chrome extension to force SSL connection on websites you wish to use encrypted. Install it and if you have set chrome to sync extensions too, you should be good on any computer you use Chrome on with your profile synced.
ps: as far as I know, there is no complete fix for this issue on wifi networks. This extension is only a partial solution.
