Audio Fades or Stops While Running Chrome Windows 8.1 Metro App In Background?

Audio Fades or Stops While Running Chrome Windows 8 Metro App In Background? That won’t be fixed according to Google. Read on, to find out why.

Audio Fades or Stops While Running Windows 8 Metro App In Background?

Today, while Soundcloud was playing some music for me on Chrome, I switched from the Chrome Metro app to another one, while leaving Chrome in the background. Music stopped as soon as I switched to the other app. It resumed when I opened Chrome again.

I found many users reporting the same issue on Chrome support forum. So, it was not my computer or my set up.

Is It Same for All Metro Apps on Windows 8?

No. I found this on Microsoft’s website.

In Windows 8, we made it really easy for you to develop an app that plays audio in a simple and power efficient manner. Windows 8 provides system level controls that are designed to improve the user experience within the MediaControl class, using stream categorization, and media transport controls. In this section, we look at how to make your app play audio in the background. We don’t go into details about actually playing audio or the Media Control classes. For more info about the audio technologies, see the Audio playback in a Metro style app white paper.

There are three important requirements that the app must meet to play audio in the background:

  • A background audio declaration must be in the app manifest.
  • You must set the stream category (msAudioCategory) to either Communications or BackgroundCapableMedia.
  • Your app must register for media transport controls.

The article has detailed instructions on how to get this working.

 So, Why Chrome?

I got my answer from this Chrome bug report. ts not just Chrome. IE 10 also will do the same thing if you play something with audio and change to another app, leaving it run in the background.

windows 8 Audio Fades or Stops While Running Chrome Windows 8.1 Metro App In Background?

We were told my Microsoft that it was unsupported behavior for Metro-style browsers to continue audio playback in the background., a Chromium developer says.

The Music app on Windows 8 can play music in background, so why not other apps like browsers?

The Music app is a pure Metro app, whereas Chrome and IE are desktop apps under the hood. We’d love to be able to emulate this functionality, but Microsoft’s guidance is that we can’t.

Unfortunately, the OS is in control here. There’s no decision Chrome can make to continue playing music in the background; when Chrome is running as a Windows 8 app, and it goes offscreen, the operating system simply suspends us and we cannot continue executing any processes. It’s out of our control.

So, there you have it. Chrome will not be able to give you music in the background if you are running it as a metro app. Here is how you can switch between metro mode and desktop mode.

Is There Any Workaround?

So desktop mode is what you will have to use until someone finds a workaround. An alternative method you can follow for now is running Chrome Metro App in Snap In mode. That is, running Chrome and your second or third app side by side. To do this, you need to click and drag Chrome from top of the window and snap it to left or right and then open second app. Like this:

Stay tuned to this blog, I will update when a workaround is available for sure!

Chrome Frame, Now Bundled With Google Toolbar

Not sure when Chrome started doing this, but Chrome Frame is now bundled with Google Toolbar. This is just a quick note to let you all know about this news chrome news Chrome Frame, Now Bundled With Google Toolbar

For anyone who needs a note to remember what Chrome Frame is,

“Google Chrome Frame seamlessly enhances your browsing experience in Internet Explorer. It displays Google Chrome Frame enabled sites using Google Chrome’s rendering technology, giving you access to the latest HTML5 features as well as Google Chrome’s performance and security features without in any way interrupting your usual browser usage,” explains Google.

There are many Google services that use Chrome Frame: Google Calendar, Google Drive/Docs, YouTube and more. Now that Google Apps dropped support for old IE versions (IE6 – 2010, IE7 – 2011, IE8 – November 2012), Chrome Frame is the only way to use Google Apps if you can’t update to a new IE release or switch to a different browser, says  of Google System.

Google Chrome Will Support “Do Not Track” Soon

Meet the new security feature coming to Chrome, “Do Not Track” It is already available for Firefox, IE and Safari. Google will ad this feature to Chrome by end of the year.

So, What Is “Do Not Track”

Well, it does pretty much the same thing as what the name says. Here is the official description of this initiative. donottrack.us provides guidelines on how this can be implemented as well.

chrome news Google Chrome Will Support Do Not Track Soon

Do Not Track is a technology and policy proposal that enables users to opt out of tracking by websites they do not visit, including analytics services, advertising networks, and social platforms. At present few of these third parties offer a reliable tracking opt out, and tools for blocking them are neither user-friendly nor comprehensive. Much like the popular Do Not Call registry, Do Not Track provides users with a single, simple, persistent choice to opt out of third-party web tracking.

Good news for all those extra security conscious mind here! Will you be enabling this feature/installing extension when it is available?

Download and Install Chrome App for Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 is here and Google Chrome is going to be one of the first apps that you are going to install. I did the same thing after installing the new Windows 8.1 Operating system. I installed Chrome on Win 8.1 and then  wrote this guide to help all those who needs chrome on Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 Chrome App Download

When Microsoft announced the Developer Preview of Windows8.1, the first thing I wanted to do was to get it working on a PC here and try Google Chrome on Windows 8.1. It took me  a while to finish those 2Gigs of download, but finally, I have Chrome working on Windows8.1.

Installing Chrome on Windows 8.1 was pretty simple, and almost 100% similar to how you will do it on Windows7. Opened up IE10 that comes with Windows 8.1, (probably first and last time windows 8 Download and Install Chrome App for Windows 8.1 ) to download Chrome and run the file after the download.

The Installation & “Smart Screen Cannot Be Reached Now” Error

Chrome for windows xp and 7 will work fine on windows 8.1. Download it from google.com/chrome and start your installation. But there is a small chance for this “smart screen” error to show up, which we will discuss in this article.

Download Chrome for Windows 8.1

When you download the file you have the option to set Chrome as your default browser. This is selected by default. Un-check if you want to keep IE or any other browser as your default.

Windows smartscreen can’t be reached right now

All you need to do is click on “More Info” on that screen and then select “run anyway” . That’s it, Chrome will download the rest of the set up file and install it. If you find any issues doing that you can always download the full set up file and install it.

Once you have Chrome installed, you will be asked to “Sign In To Chrome” to use the “Chromesync”. If you have this enabled on your other PCs, you will get all your extensions,settings,theme and bookmarks etc on your Windows8.1 install of Chrome just by signing in.

Add Chrome Tile on Home Screen of Windows 8.1

So, you got Chrome installed on Windows 8.1. Next thing that you will need is to have the Chrome app’s tile showing up on your home screen where Internet Explorer is now. It is really easy. Chrome will be on the right end of your screen now. Scroll to the end and find it. Now, click and drag it all the way to the beginning of the screen place it wherever you want!

Chrome on Windows 8.1 feels very similar to the windows 7 experience, save for the new animations that they have added for all apps while opening the window, minimizing it or closing it. I am still looking for Windows 8.1 specific tips for Chrome, and you will see more updates soon.

But again, this is just a developer preview for now and things that we see here may not be the final version of it. Hopefully, we will see a lot of things changing before Windows 8.1 makes it to the final release.

Make Your Windows PC Keyboard Work Like Chrome OS Cr48 Notebook

When I published “How to Make Your Caps Lock Key Search the Web, CR48 Style” last week, apruler2012 was smart enough to play around with it, continuously and made a script to take this Cr48 style keyboard modification to a whole new level. The script works for Chrome, Firefox and most of it on IE.

What Do You Get From The Script

The script changes the current functions of menu keys on your windows machine and make it work better for a web centric life style. You get more control and more convenience with keyboard.
Caps Lock:: New tab / Open browser (Open browser does not work for IE)
Shift + Caps Lock:: Caps Lock ( actual caps lock, so its not gone )
F1:: Previous Page
F2:: Next Page
F9:: Previous Tab
F10:: Next Tab
F12 (Chrome):: chrome://settings
F12 (Firefox):: about:config
F12 does not work for IE

Sounds cool uh ? Now, he has avideo tutorial on how to do this. So, here it is. and GREAT WORK apruler2012 and sorry that I published this late,  I was away for  awhile.

How to Get This to Work

AutoHotKey Download page: http://goo.gl/2PJEr

Auto Start Any Program: http://goo.gl/w9mD2

1.) Download and install AutoHotKey ( http://goo.gl/2PJEr )
2.) Create new AutoHotKey Script (in a location where you won’t move the file) by right clicking going to New and AutoHotKey Script
3.) Right click on the HotKey Script then Edit this Script
4.) Delete everything on there and copy everything from the Google Doc Page to the script. ( http://goo.gl/1taHu )
5.) Edit the “If FileExist(“C:\Users\[YOUR COMPUTER NAME] \AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe”)” so [YOUR USER NAME] is actually your computer name.
6.) Save and set script to auto start if you wish ( http://goo.gl/w9mD2 )

Hi, from Google Chrome, I’m on Windows 7 !!

Hi friends ! this is your buddy google chrome speaking. I wanted to tell you about this small trip that I am taking to Windows 7, a new operating system from Microsoft. I feel proud when I see my name listed on the all new taskbar of windows 7, along with media player and IE 8.

I reached here fine, and the journey was smooth and fast. I was expecting some issues landing here, since I am not so used to this enviornment. But, things went well, download, installation and setup, all worked fine. Infact, I am writing this note to you all from my place in this windows 7 island ! It’s so beautiful around here, really.

I had to change my looks a bit, you know.. you may not recognize me at first sight, if you come here for now… I don’t have that blueish look that I used to have when I was on Windows XP. I have changed my looks according to the theme here, you see I must look a native, as long as I am here right ? But if you guys prefer my blueish looks, you can definitely do that when themes are officially announced.

Even Though this is a 64 bit capable laptop, it’s using 32bit windows 7 on here. It s not making any difference, but I just wanted to note that, for the record.  Anyway, this windows 7 thing is beta, right ?

Did anyone else try google chrome on windows 7 ? Did you find any error message ? Need help ? please drop me comments, and help questions are welcome on our new forum
