Gears

Google has identified  a major security risk to the browser and also added a security update for the browser. Here is more info from Google Chrome’s blog

Severity: Critical. An attacker might be able to run code with the privileges of the logged on user.
If you are using Google Chrome now, what you need to do, is check if your Google Chrome installation is latest.  I have explained how to do this here The version should show “ 1.0.154.64″ for stable version users. If this is not the current version of your browser, you will see an “upgrade” link next to it, click it, and then restart the browser when upgrade is done.
Along with this new security patch, this release also contains
  • A new notification at startup that makes it easier to set Google Chrome as the default browser. If you don’t want Google Chrome to be the default browser, you can click ‘Don’t ask again’.
  • A new version of Gears (0.5.16.0)

Most of you will have the latest version installed, automatically. Surprised ? What Google

Chrome Fans Blog explains here is so true, the auto update feature really rocks !!

When it comes to browsers and Google, its tool bar for IE and Firefox is something google started offering well before Chrome and Google Tool bas has a good amount of popularity among internet users. Still when Google created its own browser, they did not add Google Tool bar support by default.Even when I tried to install it, the toolbar website said it does not support Google Chrome !

Well, they did add Google Gears support, which is another browser related application developed by Google. Google gears, is not really popular when compared to The toolbar.

So, what does it mean ?

Google is not going to work more on google toolbar. May be we will hear someday that they stopped development on this project, like they did for google notebook. But Gooogle Gears, is something they want to work more on. That is why you see Gmail enabling  offline feature and Google Calender going offline with Google Gears support.

Do you need Google Toolbar on Chrome ?

I have installed the google toolbar on firefox, but I have disabled it in the view menu. I enable it only when I need to check pagerank of some website. I do not use toolbar for anything more than that. But for people who use google toolbar, Google chrome is not very friendly until they enable it on the browser ….

Are you a google toolbar user waiting for the feature on google chrome ? Will you start using Chrome if they enable this feature ?
