chrome news Is there a hidden Document viewer in Google Chrome ? Gview ?

Google Gview

I love rumors, and rumors with some bit of proof ? ….  that will be really cool ! … now, here is one for you. A blogger over here, found out that there is a hidden document viewer in Google Chrome, which can be enabled by adding –enable-viewer to the command line on your Chrome. Confused ? Wait,  I will tell you what it is.

How It Works

It works like the document viewer in Gmail. Remember those tiny links, asking you if you want to open documents in Google Docs ? ( spreadsheets, word files and PPTs ) … you click on them, and the document is there on another window for you, without downloading it, and without opening your MS Office program.

I hope you got this far. Now, imagine this, you found a PDF or PPT file online, a link on the website, somewhere … normally, you will need to download the file, and then open it .. right ? ( sometimes yes, pdf files do open in browser )   but with this cool feature, you can open it on your browser itself, perhaps, as a new tab … cool uh ?

What is Gview ?

Gview is a little secret that Google has kept inside their Google Docs thing, where you can view any PDF or PPT document online by putting it through Gview stuff, just like you embed a video from youtube etc. In other words, it makes documents “embeddable”. Well, it works on all browsers .. but for Chrome, it will be in built, … may be we will see something more to this very soon.

The document need not be hosted on Google Docs or anywhere on google. You can upload it anywhere, and just give the URL .

Don’t you think this is cool ?

Managing bookmarks, is something that makes your browser experience better. It makes easier for us to find out something on our bookmarks. Until now, this feature was not available on Google Chrome. On the Dev version that  I am testing now, this feature seems available !! So, this feature wil be added to your browsers very soon.

Here is how to do it.

Click  howto How to Reorder Bookmarks in Alphabetical Order on Google Chromeon Chrome Tool Bar.
Click “Bookmarks Manager”
Click “Organize”
Click “Reorder By Title”

Update: An easier way to access and manage your bookmarks will be opening chrome://bookmarks/ in your omnibox (address bar). This will take you to the bookmark manager.

That’s it !!

When it comes to browsers and Google, its tool bar for IE and Firefox is something google started offering well before Chrome and Google Tool bas has a good amount of popularity among internet users. Still when Google created its own browser, they did not add Google Tool bar support by default.Even when I tried to install it, the toolbar website said it does not support Google Chrome !

Well, they did add Google Gears support, which is another browser related application developed by Google. Google gears, is not really popular when compared to The toolbar.

So, what does it mean ?

Google is not going to work more on google toolbar. May be we will hear someday that they stopped development on this project, like they did for google notebook. But Gooogle Gears, is something they want to work more on. That is why you see Gmail enabling  offline feature and Google Calender going offline with Google Gears support.

Do you need Google Toolbar on Chrome ?

I have installed the google toolbar on firefox, but I have disabled it in the view menu. I enable it only when I need to check pagerank of some website. I do not use toolbar for anything more than that. But for people who use google toolbar, Google chrome is not very friendly until they enable it on the browser ….

Are you a google toolbar user waiting for the feature on google chrome ? Will you start using Chrome if they enable this feature ?
