How To Get Chromebook Like App Menu In Chrome

Like the app menu in Chrome OS devices? You can get the Chromebook like app menu in Windows Mac or Linux machines too!

Its easy!

How To Get Chromebook Like App Menu In Chrome

  1. Create a desktop shortcut or taskbar shortcut
  2. Right click and select Properties
  3. In Target, after  chrome.exe, add  –show-app-list
  4. Click Apply

Now, try clicking that desktop shortcut and you should see this!

Now, this is not just the app menu. You have a search option too. You can search your history and bookmarks too!

Open As Tab Window or Fullscreen

What happens when you click app from this menu? It opens up the app in a new tab. What if you want it to open in a new window or fullscreen instead of tab?

Right click any app and you will see those options. Choose from pinned, tabbed, full screen or window mode!

I created a desktop shortcut like this and named it Appmenu and made separate desktop icon for normal Chrome. Thank you François Beaufort for this awesome tip!!!

On Windows 7/8 the App Launcher appears as a separate taskbar icon. You can pin it and it behaves as expected! Cool.

The App Launcher will even properly point to the proper taskbar button. Cool. :)

    Hi Dino!

And how to make apps open on windows (not as a tab in a new window) in ChromeOS by default after installed?

Every time that I install an app, its default option is to open as a tab. I want to change that so the default for newer and old apps where windows.

    Sorry about my english!

good question. I will update the blog post with the answer…

Dinu, I am on the ChromeOS and just installed some app. By default, it opens in a tabbed window. I have to right click it to choose to open in window mode. My question is, how to set this window mode as default in ChromeOS for newly installed apps? (not selecting it for each one)

How can you do this on MacOS? It seems like its on done on Windows. Unless I am missing something.

  • Dan

BLAH, it only crashes Chrome on Windows 8 Release Preview.
