Chromebox – A Little Flashback

Chromebox was announced during Google I/0 2011, about an year back. Sundar Pichai of Google Chrome team teased everyone with a picture of Samsung Chromebox. The latest update we got about them was, ““Samsung™s Chromebox Is Coming in Mid-2012 for $400″  The release date still sounds almost true, but the price has been reduced from $400 to $329.99, which is of course a really good move.

There were rumors about a Wireless Mouse and Keyboad getting bundled with Samsung Chromebox, but we do not have any confirmation on this yet.

So, Google I/O 2012 is going to be a really exciting event for all Chrome OS fans!!

    There’s actually two Chromeboxes…

    A 1.9Ghz Celeron version (XE300M22-A01US, $330) and a 2.5Ghz i5 version (XE300M22-A02US, $500).

All of the news outlets either missed this or glossed over it.

    Nit-picking (sorry): “Google I/0″ – Should be Google I/O as in Input/Output.

Some may say my question is dumb BUT, what’s a Chromebox FOR? Is it like a desktop, and one will need to add the peripherals? Or is to be used with a television for streaming video, etc.? Sounds great, but still, I am not sure of the uses of a Chromebox….

Yeah I don’t really get the purpose of the Chromebox.

Google engineers say that they want it to be a TV media center streamer, but it’s going to have to come down in price for anyone to consider it.

No one would want to use it for real work…

And if one just wants to surf the net and create a few documents, they’re probably better off with a Chromebook or even a tablet.
