by Dinu on 11/06/2011

When Google officially announced prices for Chromebooks, they kept just one item pending. The price for Acer Cromia Chromebook with 3G. They announced price of the wifi only version was priced $379.99. It was priced at $349, but now, looks like they upped it to $379

Looking at the Acer Cromia Chromebook (3G)chromebook Acer Cromia Chromebook 3G Price $449.99 today, the price has been set for the 3G version too and it is $449.99, almost $50 less than Samsung Series 5 with 3G.

The web is all going gaga about Samsung Chromebook ( good bad and those idiotic complaints and comparisons ) but looks like they all have forgotten Acer Chromebooks. Even Google didn’t do much for it’s  promotion, when comparing to what they did for Samsung Chromebooks.

Did Google just ignore Acer Chromebooks ? Well, I think they figured that Samsung Series 5 will be impress consumers and Chromia will be a choice for business and colleges with subscription model. They won’t mind making some compromises on the look for saving some $$ right ?

But, there may be consumers who want to buy Acer Chroma as well, for its lesser price, better screen and the HDMI port. Anyone present here ?

The original price of the Acer was only 349. I wonder why it was raised when Amazon actually started offering pre-sales…

3G :)

Yeah, but I’m talking about the non-3G model. It was stated that it would be 349, but now it’s 379. What happened?

Dinu June 11, 2011 at 10:21 pm

no, they didnt announce price for 3G first..

Dave June 11, 2011 at 11:17 pm

I know. I’m not talking about the 3G’s price. Back at I/O when Google announced these Chromebooks, the Acer was listed at $349 for the WIFI only model. Now that it’s on sale, they’ve raised the price to $379 and I can’t seem to find any explanation as to way.

Here’s a the announcement link from this blog:

So I still don’t understand how these are so expensive? I love the idea of these, but you can get a real computer for less than these with a 250gb hard drive with Hdmi out. Granted they do sound faster which is my favorite part, especially the initial load. The only real game changer is the 3g, but even so I can’t reasonably see these being over $300 with what else is on the market.

I’m finding myself more interested in the Acer model because of some little things like an HDMI port and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. But I was a bit more excited when everyone was stating price would be $349. Now that it’s only $50 less than the Samsung (WIFI only and 3G models), I’ll have to do some more research to see which one I really want.

let me know what you finalize on :)

One thing is for sure, they’re all cheaper than my Android smartphone.

Dinu June 12, 2011 at 10:15 am

correct :) everyone expected around $300 and that’s what even Eric Schmidt announced, price of chromebooks will be in-line with current netbook prices, he once said

I can understand that Google might give Samsung a little
more as far as promo goes as they have worked with them
on phones for awhile, But I still do not understand why they
are not selling Chromebooks like they sell phones under
contract (2 year) and give it away?

Plans by the gigabytes!

What do you think?

Dinu June 12, 2011 at 10:16 am

Google tried to save Android smartphones from the cell contracts lock, they failed. This time, they don’t want to give any chance, I believe ..cell contracts are not good always..

I guess it’s because they can sell more Chromebooks than they are able to manufacturer. If there is demand, the price is going to stay high. A lot of business find these laptops suitable for their employees, not to mention all the teens that do nothing but sit on Facebook and Youtube all day.
