How to Disable the Auto Translation Bar in Google Chrome

by Dinu

Okay guys, I have played enough with the auto translation bar, and decided that I don’t really need it because I usually browse webpages only in English .

Now I need a way to stop Google Chrome from offering translated version of every webpage that I visit, if there is a couple of words in any other language.

Here is how to stop auto translation 100% on Google Chrome. Please note that this currently works only on Chrome Developer version. It should be available to everyone soon. Here is how to change to Beta or Developer version if you can’t wait until that, and if you are too crazy about Google Chrome, check out the best chrome tips we have collected.

The latest Google Chrome on the Dev channel has an option. Go to Options\Preferences–>Under The Hood. There is a section called “Translate” and an option to stop the translation features completely (“Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language I read.”).

Fu**ing Google auto-updating my browser without my consent, and fu**ing Google adding new features with no way of turning them off. Soon I’ll be moving back to firefox. Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. FU**ING GOOGLE.

I agree. Features with no way to turning it off are a shame!

Just add all the languages of the pages you usually visit (IE: Tools > Internet Settings > General > Languages; Firefox: Tools > Settings > Contens > Languages — or something very similar: I have both browsers in Danish…, and the toolbar will disappear. Of course it will pop up again if I visit a page in chinese, korean or zulu, or another language I didn’t add…

chrome story May 8, 2010 at 12:56 am

thanks for the update !

Are you saying that this feature is already there in IE and Firefox as default ? :D

Michael May 8, 2010 at 1:43 am

This was the solution that worked for me. And i use IE… and sometimes fox… Works in both.

On a Mac, go to preferences, under the hood, scroll down to web content and un-check the check-box that says “offer to translate..”.

Using Chrome 5 on a Mac. How do I keep translation working, but hide the “This page has been translated from …” message?
I already told it to always translate pages on that site, I really don’t need the message on every page on the site.
btw – danged if I can find the “Languages” option under Preferences. It’s not in Preferences > Under the hood> Web content > Change font settings

Hello!

I accidentally clicked the “Always translate to English” button. I am doing a self-study in Korean and I prefer Korean pages the way they are. However, I would need the translator’s help sometimes as well.

How do I “undo” the “Always translate” option, and allow the translation bar to pop out every time and ask me if it should translate the current page I’m in or not?

I just installed today and I see how everyone is pissed. Might I offer a “different” solution? Now, I’m in the Philippines and the fact that even the OPTION tab is all in tagalog is starting to piss me off and I KNOW the language, but it’s confusing as a UI language. Here’s what I did:

1 Exit Google Chrome

2 Right-click the google icon.

3 Click FIND TARGET

4 Above the icon is a folder with numbers on it. Might be IP address dunno(kind of “34.64.574.3.33…. or something.”)

5 Open the “locales” folder

6 Delete all the DLL files EXCEPT “en-US.dll”

7 Open Google Chrome and smile

And “WHACK!” the pesky fly is dead and all the options are FINALLY back in english.
Could you Imagine if you were in Korea when you installed? That’d be Nucking Futs.

HAPPY SURFING and you’re welcome! :)

Other options -
1. Go to chrome://settings/languages (type it by yourself) and select English as the default language (Add (at the bottom of the dialog)–>English (United States)–>OK–>Select “English (United States)”–>Click on “Display Google Chrome in this language” (first button to the right of the languages)).

2. Right click on the shortcut icon, choose “Properties”, append -
–lang=en
To the “Target” field and start Chrome through that shortcut.
